Moving in my God-daughter for her freshman school year. It's a gorgeous campus. All staff have been extremely helpful.
The college's reputation for being a campus full of mean girls perpetuates year after year. Mount Holyoke students do not express any interest in creating community; they freely exclude people from social circles who they don't think will elevate their own status (and they are very good at psychological bullying.) I constantly had to fight other girls for campus and classroom resources and had several incidences of theft of my property. As an alumna back on campus, I still receive the same dirty looks from random girls on campus and passive aggressive comments from professors who don't know I'm not a student. I resent this college for charging me a 6 figure price tag for four years of isolation and lack of practical preparation for the workforce. Do not ask your first years to call my cell phone groveling for charity money after I financed your professors' salaries and received only disrespect from them in return.
I remember when Dr. Houseman sent his daughter “Baby” here to study Economics of Underdeveloped Countries. Money well spent!
The entire Mt Holyoke system was personally traumatising, from the interdisciplinary degree I could create to the social connections, insufficient lack of support with career, internships and counselling. My sports teammates were bullies, and the coaches enabled that. The Residential Advisor department is horrible. I left mid-way to graduate early in my final semester - a fellow RA in the same position was placed in the nicest dorm, and I was placed in a basement room with clunky pipes. The World Peace class was taught from a white colonial perspective. The student body was international but not diverse in the true sense of the word. The only saving grace were some of the kind professors, and that I got to take better classes at other colleges.
Best place!!!! One of the most beautiful colleges I’ve seen
Touring the canvas with someone who might be interested in college campuses, it was a really nice campus to walk around. Clearly the maintenance staff is doing a great job at keeping it well manicured and there are plenty of trees around to provide shade when needed. All in all a nice place to visit.
I have to admit, while I was attending Hampshire, I would go to the MHC campus frequently to study, BECAUSE the campus is GORGEOUS! Pastoral, breathtaking and stunning are a few of the adjectives I would use to describe it. Even more so than Smith. It's just a GORGEOUS campus architecturally. The class I took at Mt. Holyoke during my fourth year @ Hampshire was a GREAT experience taught by a visiting professor from NYC whom I wanted to study with, and it ended up being the perfect forum for me to present my Hampshire Division III work in Theater for larger Five-College feedback. Looking back on the experience, I wish I'd taken more than just one course at Mt. Holyoke in four years, but that's just how it worked out. I tended to take more of my courses at Smith (when it came to the women's colleges), because Smith had better course variety in my academic concentration than Mt. Holyoke did; and it was in Northampton, where I ❤️'d hanging out. South Hadley was, shall we say, a bit more "isolated." Academically though, this was one of the HUGEST virtues of the consortium -- you had FIVE campuses to draw on the academic resources and extracurricular opportunities of. This ABSOLUTELY was the #1 reason I attended the Five Colleges to begin with.
Had to do our own sort of self-tour due to Covid restrictions. Fantastic campus (even in the rain) and traditions. Met 2 incoming 1st year students and spoke to them about their decision to attend. Nothing but good things to say. Academics are top notch. My daughter will be applying and keeping fingers crossed.
First Impressions are so very important for this family. We visited Mount Holyoke with daughter who will be a transfer student this fall. Each person we met from Admissions and Financial Aid as well as in the Athletic department was genuinely interested in our Daughter. The students we spoke with were cordial, warm and excited for our Daughter to arrive next semester. Did I mention the campus is beautiful. Thank you all for welcoming us into the Lady Lyon Family!
The college is very accommodating, however the campus community itself is very segregated. I believe that there should be a focus on cross culture integration. In terms of the facilities, the dorm space Is very small and guests must be accompanied to all areas with the student. The guest should be able to leverage facilities with a guest pass of some sort. For example, when a student is in class, the guest should be able to go to the gym. Anais at the gym did not allow a guest to sign-in, despite offering student approval to utilize the gym. However, a few days before we were allowed to have a guest to sign-in. This policy should be reviewed. The dining space is very welcoming and the food is delicious.
