There are a few amazing people here, but my experience was horrible. It took me three years to finally decide to get out, but I've left behind friends who are still hurting over the poor quality assurance in staff and terrible accountability. If I could, I would've stayed far away from UWRF and saved myself a lot of pain. The only reason I'm not giving it the lowest rating is because there are good staff members, but they have to shoulder the burden of their colleagues. There are certainly people that should be fired, and there are policies that need to change. If you're thinking of anything except agriculture and environment science, the university itself won't care about you as a student.
I graduated quite a while back but this school was wonderful! I grew up in a small town in western Wisconsin and was very nervous about going to a big school but wanted a solid education. This school happened to be the closest university to my home town so I chose it (which tells you a lot about the decision-making skills of a teenager). This turned out to be one of the luckiest and smartest things I ever did. The teachers are very approachable and knowledgeable in their area and they treat the students like real people. The computer curriculum was first rate when I went there, considerable better than the University of MN that looms over the local academic landscape. The costs (back in the day) were extremely reasonable, especially considering that I got a first-class education. I hope they still have the textbook library, that was a stroke of genius for keeping costs down. As I grew more comfortable around the campus, I started getting involved in the activities and there was a lot to do. I'm told that there is even more to do now. The sports teams did their best to foster school spirit but they were usually in over their heads but I didn't go to the school to watch the sports teams and I learned SO very, very much.
Spent 5 years making the most of my experience! Had a wonderful time and got out with a few degrees and studied on 3 continents. The small class size gave me an opportunity to have conversations with the professors and better understand the material. The affordable tuition meant I got out without too much debt.
UW River Falls is a close commute from the Twin Cities, it offers a very nice education, and a great environment for the students. Many students go home almost every weekend which makes it hard to maintain friendships as a new student to UW River Falls. Besides that, the school is well maintained, and many different career paths you could take for the quality education you need.
UW River Falls was a god send! For the price and the quality of the education my son is receiving, I could not have asked for, or gotten a better deal. The campus is picturesque and I have had nothing but positive interactions with coaches and students. I feel I would be remiss if I failed to mention a incident my son recently had. While walking, in front of his dorm, to the grocery store with a friend, a man driving down the street yelled a racial epithet at them. I am sure this pleasant fellow was not associated with the college in anyway, nevertheless it reflects badly on a fine institution.
Where to begin? So I graduated from UWRF in Spring 2012. UWRF has a great psychology program with professors you can actually get to know. Most of them are overqualified but they stay with RF because they love what they do. I could not have received a better education between their psych and sociology programs. Their sports teams offer a welcoming environment for athletes of all levels. I competed for sports teams and found a highly supportive community among other athletes. The WIAC conference is one of the best D3 conferences in the NCAA, so there's plenty of competition. Their hockey and track teams regularly make it to the NCAA national competitions. While in RF, I also found plenty of leadership opportunities that really helped me figure out who I am as a professional. Having the Twin Cities nearby offers great options for jobs, internships, or just a night out. River Falls is literally a college community. It has the small-town feel but there's plenty of nightlife and activities to keep you busy. Unfortunately, a large portion of its students are commuters, which means the campus is mostly quiet on the weekends. It's also not a very diverse community. As an African American, there were others like me, but UWRF attracts mostly white farm-boys and girls. I found that because of the proximity to the Twin Cities metro, River Falls is a melting pot of young urban adults looking for an inexpensive education, immigrants coming from abroad, and white-suburban or white-rural adults looking to stay close to home. Most people there are pretty respectful of the diversity. River Falls has plenty of parks, great system of trails around Glen Park, and they are upgrading a lot of their recreational facilities. River Falls is a great place if you are young and open-minded, ready to get a quality education for less than half the price of the U of M, if you want small class sizes and personalized attention, and if you like to drink and party.
The Geology department is AMAZING! Every single one of the professors is fantastic and extremely passionate and helpful. I am SO glad that I chose UWRF. Very impressed!
The police in River Falls, WI are used to keep outsiders out. Younger men who are not Northern European are not welcome in River Falls WI. The locals enjoy good sport antagonizing them and setting them up for crimes. I was physically assaulted by an employee of the University named Jim Cook but I could not say anything because all the locals are related to the Police there.
Treat people awful, including parents. Would not send my kid here. You are more than likely to get a ticket if you enter their lot. Very rude and not very helpful. Beware
Love the athletic department here. Everyone is so helpful and involved!
