I was a student in the Elementary Education program. I finished ALL of my classes except for student teaching because I was blessed with a baby right before I would have started student teaching. I talked with the department about letting me get a job as a teacher and counting that for student teaching (because let's face it, who can afford child care and pay for college?) They informed me that was not acceptable and I had to go through their program. So I decided to change my major to Sociology and at a later date get my license to teach. Here I am now at a later date trying to get my license to teach and what the U failed to tell me is that their program does not follow state guidelines for licensure, but they have special permission to give licensure to students who finish their program. I now have classes from their program that don't follow the state guidelines so more than half of the classes that I took there do not count towards my licensure and I have to take about 6 classes to catch back up. Obviously, this isn't a problem if you have the perfect situation and are able to follow and finish their program as outlined. However, as they teach in many of their courses, students are diverse and it is important to teach and be flexible in order to serve a diverse culture. They clearly do not practice what they preach. They did nothing to help me or warn me when I started a family. They are not family friendly and I would highly suggest another school for your education degree. They are a business and they put the students last. I specifically remember an instance where I received an email to NOT park on campus because there was going to be a football game. I was so angry because I had a test in a class and then I had to figure out how to even get to my test because their football program is more important than their students' educations...at a university.
